When you contact a person by phone, always ask them what their name is. Write it down, along with the date and time of the call. This helps put you in control by maintaining accurate records. “Hello, who am I speaking with? This is _______ and I would like to speak to someone about errors in my account, please.”

When you are connected (get the name of this person as well):

“My account number is _______________________

Be aware that your creditor may be reviewing your credit report and is well aware of what is listed there. During your conversation ALWAYS maintain your composure and be humble, (even if you want to yell and scream). Always use “please” and “thank you”. Always keep your composure.

Listen to what they have to say. You want to find out your balance, any interest owed, penalties and any past due amount, etc.

If you get lost or feel you are losing control, just excuse yourself by saying: “Excuse me (persons name), may I have your phone number and extension. I will need to call you back. When would be a good time?”

Key points to emphasize and go back to during conversation (choose items pertaining to your personal situation):

  • “This is an effort to pay my debt”
  • “This is only a temporary situation”
  • “I would rather do it this way instead of going bankrupt”
  • “Please work with me so I can realistically make payments”
  • “My intentions are to honor this debt”
  • “My economic situation has changed since our agreement”

Your goals:

  • To get the interest lowered or stopped.
  • To get incorrect information removed.
  • To stop penalties.
  • To establish a payment plan you can realistically maintain.
